Advanced Desmos for the SAT

Regressions, sliders, solving by intersection — and knowing when Desmos is the slow way.

The 30-second version

three power moves — sliders for "for what value of k…" questions, regression (y₁ ~ mx₁ + b) to fit lines to table data, and treating any equation as two graphs to intersect. Plus the judgment rule: if you can see the answer in your head in ten seconds, the calculator is the slow way. Fluency includes knowing when to leave it closed.

The power moves

  1. Sliders for unknown constants

    Question: "for what value of k does x² + kx + 9 = 0 have exactly one solution?" Type the equation with k in it; Desmos offers to add a slider. Drag k and watch the parabola until it just touches the x-axis (k = 6 or −6). What was an abstract discriminant problem becomes something you can see.

  2. Regression for best-fit questions

    Given a table of data points: enter them in a table (x₁, y₁), then type y₁ ~ mx₁ + b. Desmos computes the best-fit slope and intercept instantly — which answers "the line of best fit predicts…" questions without eyeballing. Exponential fit works the same way: y₁ ~ a·bˣ¹.

  3. Ugly equations as intersections

    Anything of the form left side = right side can be graphed as two curves; solutions are the x-values of the crossings. Rational equation with fractions everywhere? Two graphs, tap, done — and extraneous solutions never appear, because Desmos only shows real crossings.

  4. Absolute value and piecewise reading

    Graph y = |2x − 6| directly (abs on the keypad). "How many solutions does |2x − 6| = 4 have?" Add y = 4, count crossings: two.

When NOT to use Desmos

  • Pure arithmetic and one-step algebra. Typing "y = x + 7" to solve x + 7 = 12 is theater.
  • Questions about structure, not values. "Which expression is equivalent to…" often needs algebraic reasoning; a graph can verify equivalence (two identical graphs) but reading choices A–D into Desmos costs more time than factoring.
  • When setup is the hard part. Word problems still require you to build the equation; Desmos only executes it.

The honest rule from high scorers: hand-solve what's clean, graph what's ugly, and check anything you're unsure of. Desmos rewards judgment, not devotion.
